About the Guide

By Jim & Julia Kelly

Trail running is one of the fastest developing areas of physical fitness and the countryside of North Wales is one of the most scenic parts of the UK in which to practice it. With a rugged coastline, lush countryside, deep sylvan forests and all set against the backdrop of the high mountains of Snowdonia, this part of Wales is a joy upon which to plant the trainer.

In a series of fifteen runs, join the authors as they set foot to trail on some of the most exhilarating running routes within the UK. Beach, coast, field, forest and hill, to the runner who wants to get away from the mundane of pounding the tarmac these are some of the most stirring words in the English language. If you've never tried trail running then let this book guide you to some of the most memorable running experiences around. If you are a veteran of the trail running scene then, in the two writers, you've got expert guidance to routes that you simply must put foot to.

To the runner, running may be a necessity but there are some runs you just owe it to yourself to experience   .......

The Trailrunner - The Newsletter of the Trail Runner's Association Summer 2012

says:

This book describes 15 trail runs in North Wales tested by the authors. Five of the runs are on Anglesey (including one on Holy Island), four near the north coast (Conwy Bay and near Llandudno), one on the Lleyn Peninsula (south of Anglesey), and the remaining five inland near Beddgelert, Betws-y-Coed, Llanrwst and around Llyn Trawsfynnyd.
The longest run is the one on Holy Island (14 miles) and the rest average just over 7 miles. Although it is said to be aimed at the beginner, I believe most trail runners would find this book an excellent companion on a holiday in this beautiful part of Wales. Each run is rated in accordance with the Ferguson Grading System (which is explained clearly). There is a detailed description of each route and grid references for key points along the way.
The book contains sensible advice on equipment, maps and injury avoidance.
If you are tempted to visit North Wales, I'd recommend taking this book. It would be sensible to photocopy the text for each route and carry that in a transparent pocket whilst running. The book might not last the series if exposed to the weather.
The guide is the ninth of a series on off-road running. It has many photos illustrating the routes it describes and is a highly competent piece of work.
