Kielder Forest, the largest wooded area in Britain ranging from quiet secluded woodland to high moorland hills and peaks.

The eight walks in this book cover that portion of the forest around the Kielder Castle Visitor Centre but in these walks you will find isolated valleys, secluded forest tracks, rough moorland and high hills plus a history that goes back for thousands of years.

The common factor is that all of this landscape is stunning and a joy for the walker to discover.

The Walks

WALK 1: ARCHER CLEUGH
A short walk that doesn’t go that far from Kielder Castle but don’t let that put you off. Once you are away from the initial part of the walk you will be in a part of the forest that is quite isolated and does not receive large amounts of visitors.
DISTANCE: 5.5 mile (8.8 km) ASCENT: 705 feet (215 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).
TERRAIN: Forest road and track. The route returns along the forest drive.
FGS Grading  T3 [ D0, N0, T0, R1, H2]

WALK 2: DEAD MAN’S CAIRN
A walk that leaves Kielder through the small village of Butteryhaugh before picking up the route of the Bakethin North Shore walk. This is followed as it makes its way on woodland track and path past two scheduled ancient monuments, Camp Rigg Settlement and Dead Man’s Cairn.
DISTANCE: 7 mile (11.3 km) ASCENT: 594 feet (181 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).
TERRAIN: Forest track with a short section of woodland path. The route begins with a road walking section and returns along the forest drive.
FGS Grading  T3 [ D1, N1, T0, R1, H0]

WALK 3: BLACK FELL
A short road walk at the beginning of this walk takes you to a part of the forest that does not see many visitors partially because of the road walk required to access it. However once you are into the forest this walk becomes special with some superb views of the hills along the border.
DISTANCE: 5.8 miles (9.3 km) ASCENT: 607 feet (185 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).
TERRAIN: Forest road. The route begins and finishes with a road walking section.
FGS Grading  T3 [ D0, N1, T0, R1, H1]

WALK 4: BRAN’S WALLS
Bran's Walls, a walk that although still in Kielder Forest and Water Park takes you out of the woods and on to open moorland to explore the remains of an ancient settlement that dates back to the days of the Roman occupation.
DISTANCE: 5.6 miles (9 km) ASCENT: 817 feet (249 metres)
START: Kielder Burn picnic area (GR NY 652 959).
TERRAIN: First half of the walk is on forest track. The second half is rough walking over pathless forest ride and open moorland.
FGS Grading  F7 [ D0, N2, T2, R1, H2]

WALK 5: KERSHOPE CASTLE
An interesting walk that will take you along quiet forest roads far from the crowds around the visitor centre. Most of these roads are little-used as you'll see by the soft dirt surface and over-hanging branches.
DISTANCE: 8.75 miles (14 km) ASCENT: 1155 feet (352 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).
TERRAIN: Forest track.
FGS Grading  T6 [ D1, N1, T0, R2, H2]

WALK 6: DEADWATER FELL
The area around Kielder Castle is dominated by Deadwater Fell and the radar station situated on it’s summit. All of the other walks in this book have, at one point or another, views of this high hill. So how do you fancy a stroll up to the top of it  !!
DISTANCE: 7.5 miles (12 km) ASCENT: 1555 feet (474 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).
TERRAIN: Forest road and moorland track with a short section of boggy forest path.
FGS Grading  F5 [ D1, N1, T0, R1, H2]

WALK 7: CHEESE SIKE
Starting along the forest drive, this route soon turns off and circles round the hills at the back of the Kielder Castle visitor centre. As it descends alongside the waters of Cheese Sike there are outstanding views out over Kielder Water.
DISTANCE: 9.9 miles (15.8 km) ASCENT: 833 feet (254 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).

WALK 8: WHITE FELL
A longer walk that takes you above the valleys of the Akenshaw Burn and the Lewis Burn via a mixture of quiet forest roads and tracks. This is a route that goes into the heart of the forest with views over the vast expanse that is Kielder.
DISTANCE: 9.9 miles (15.8 km) ASCENT: 1280 feet (390 metres)
START: The coach drop-off point at the entrance to Kielder Castle (GR NY 631 935).
TERRAIN: Forest road with a short section of 200 metres of rough, boggy path. The route begins and finishes with a road walking section.

Kielder Castle Reviews

Each walk chapter begins with a short description of the route plus practical data including distance, ascent, terrain, time and grid references. The route finding instructions include diagrams with grid references which help direction finding, particularly at path junctions. Each walk has also been assigned a Ferguson Grading System rating and the book gives details of this system and how to interpret the grades. There are no sketch maps and we would recommend carrying the OS Explorer map OL42 and a compass.
